Flying Sparks: The Official Launch

We’re finally here! This web comic project actually birthed back on April 17th, 2010 when I put out an advertisement looking for an artist for a horror graphic novel I had written. A swell young fellow named Michael Yakutis replied with a sample of his art, and we got to talking.

Two days later, we changed things up to an idea for a web comic that was irresistable. I started mapping out the character of Johnny, who you’ll see in the first couple of pages of the storyline. From there, the story and characters morphed from the darker story I originally planned into what you’re about to see. There’s a great dynamic between characters and I have really big plans for the future which we’ll get to as long as you keep reading! I’m about seventy pages into the writing of the script, and Michael has drawn quite a few pages as well, so we are extremely excited for where this storyline goes (which you’ll get to find out about later).

For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Jon and I wrote my first comic back in junior high when I’d duel characters back and forth in the form of notes in math class to a fellow who drew much better than I did. I threw all those away years ago, so you’ll never get to see them (thankfully!). I ventured into writing comics again when I took a student-run class on comics at Berkeley in 2005. I have several more written without art that hopefully will be popping up over the next few months as well.

I also do comic reviews and interviews with creators at True Believer Reviews and Comic Related.

We’ve been itching to put up pages for awhile now, but about two weeks ago I got in touch with this fantastic graphic designer named Amanda Potter (http://fallenkitten.com/) who did the deisgn work on the pages here with the help of the beautiful background city scape drawn by Michael and a logo by Dynagirl creator Cary Kelley. I highly recommend her for web design. She’s very much worth it. And it was worth the wait to deliever a much better visual experience than I could have put out on my own.

Finally, a quick special thanks to Jan Shroeder who lets me bounce ideas off of her to make sure I’ve got a decent story going on.
