The Origin of Meta-Man:  Episode 1

Welcome to the beginning of the audio drama saga of The Origin of Meta-Man!  The story starts in the middle of the Korean War, 1951, where we learn the secrets of Meta-Man’s powers.

I wrote the first episode of this series in November 2010, a few months after the comic had launched.  I knew Meta-Man was going to be a big character in Flying Sparks, but the heart of the comic isn’t about him, so there was very little room for his background in order to keep Chloe and Johnny’s story going.  So naturally, as I’m lettering pages I start to think, “Maybe I should do a spin-off Meta-Man comic, golden age style!”

About that time I discovered old time radio dramas, and instantly fell in love with the feel that old superhero serials, remakes of movies and horror shows had to offer.  There’s something about audio that really allows the imagination to take control, and is lost in current mainstream culture.  That said, I found a great community of new audio drama series online, being podcast through iTunes.   I’ll recommend some of those later.  Long story short, I set out to produce my own.

First thing was first.  Did a couple of rewrites and soon enough it was 2011.  I was simultaneously gathering actors across the internet (no easy process!) and started getting the script to them.  When lines came back in, I started having to think about sound effects and music.  The masochist that I am decided to write and record the music myself, which alone took several hours just to get the songs you here in the background laid down (with one exception).  Between writing, producing, setting the actors’ files in order, putting in sound, producing the music, mixing… you don’t want to know how many hours went into this production.

It was well worth it though.  I’m very proud of the beginning of this story, and I hope you like it too!  Now off with you, listen!
